Air Traffic Controllers are primarily responsible for keeping aircraft safely separated from each other in the air. In other words, Controllers ensure that aircraft don´t collide with each other in flight. This can be achieved by instructing aircraft to fly at a certain altitude or a specific route. Controllers maintain contact with the aircraft through the use of FM radio (much like a music DJ in a commercial radio station!). The control of aircraft movements is achieved largely through radar surveillance, or simply by visual contact when the aircraft is within sight of the Control Tower.

An Air Traffic Controller has to be familiar with the topics of Meteorology, Navigation, Telecommunications and of course, Aviation. The Controller´s training involves intensive theoretical courses on these subjects. After succeeding in numerous written examinations the candidate then undergoes a six to twelve month on-the-job training period. After successful completion of the training period, the candidate Controller is licensed to work on his or her own. The whole training process is designed to ensure a high level of competence for the job.

In short, the Controller´s job is extremely demanding and challenging and requires knowledge, skill and a great sense of responsibility. All Controllers take great pride in the work they do.
